Blog 4

Choosing a celebrity to analyze was very difficult for me since I follow many of them, however I decided to go with my idol and absolute favorite, Kendall Jenner. Kendall is the one of the most paid model’s in the industry and very well-known either from Keeping Up With The Kardashians or her work with a variety of companies, like Tiffany & Co, Versace, Calvin Klein, Vogue, and plenty others. Social media has played a huge role in her rise in popularity and fame, everyone has heard of her famous family and Kendall has definitely had her share of controversial moments. She is easily my favorite member of the Kardashian/Jenner family because of her down to earth personality, commitment to modeling, and honestly because she seems the most real. Kendall is the only sister that is seen the least amount on the Keeping Up With The Kardashians reality tv show.

Kendall is very visible on social media, posting regularly on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Snapchat. However, I am only going to analyze her most used and followed accounts, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Kendall is an influencer since she promotes herself through reposts from the show or just photos for runways or photoshoots. She also uses her name to promote products like Formawell Beauty X Kendall Jenner or Stuart Weitzman boots. Since she is labeled a “public figure,” she has the verified check on all her accounts, all of which are public.

To start off, Instagram is her most used and followed social media platform. In 2019, Kendall was the most paid female on Instagram even though she has less followers then Kim and Kylie. On her profile, she has seven different highlight reels which are located at the top of the page below their name and biography that include a variety of different content, with videos from photoshoots, quotes, screenshots of text messages, and overall aesthetically pleasing photos. A quick glance through her feed shows a ton of photos of herself, mostly from photoshoots or selfies. She uses her following to promote other companies often as well, and recently launched the company “Moon” an oral care brand. Along with these, Kendall works alongside her sister Kylie on a fashion brand called “Kendall + Kylie” that is mainly sold online and through PacSun and Nordstrom. Overall on Instagram, she posts way less promotional material for her products then her sisters do which is part of why she feels more authentic and normal to me.

Next for Kendall’s presence on Twitter, she only has 28.8 Million followers, but is still a part of the top 100 followed celebrities on Twitter. Her posts mainly consist of content she already posted on Instagram or retweets from her sisters and companies she’s affiliated with that posted about her. Kendall still has under 10,000 tweets whereas her sister, Kylie, has 13.7K tweets so she is less active compared to all of her sisters. For her likes section on Twitter, she likes content from fan accounts, companies or anything funny, for example, she liked a tweet by Lady Gaga that said “earth is cancelled.” Her fans like, retweet, and comment on all of her posts even though she only engages with fan accounts to like their tweets. Even though on Instagram and Twitter she does not have a bio, on Twitter her location says “an airplane.”

As for Facebook, Kendall has 17 Million followers so she is the second to last in followers out of the Kardashian/Jenner family. For the most part, she only posts what is already on Instagram, however there are some extra advertisements for her Moon Oral Care brand with links to the website as well as advertisements for Proactiv, and short videos from the show. On the about section, the only things Kendall has listed are a link to her website, a link to her app, and her gender. However, when I checked the links, she does not have a website anymore or an app anymore besides the Kendall + Kylie one. This goes to show how she does not update her Facebook profile very often.

In 2016, Kendall took a social media break to “detox” since she “strives to not be that person- not to live my life on my phone” (Elle, 2018). Also, after seeing those links do not work, I did some research and found she actually deleted her app and website in 2018 as her New Year’s Resolution to stay off her phone more (Baila, 2017). These are just more examples of how authentic she is and how normal she tries to be. It is so easy to get caught up in what we are posting on social media and how often that it can become a chore and not a way to connect and interact which is something she recognizes. I think she is an overall great role model in this sense, especially in her family, as she tries to live life in the moment.

Overall, her tone on social media is flirty or sexual, all about girl power, and self-promotion. These are obvious with her hundreds of photoshoot or bikini pictures and all her previous story content with strong independent women. Even though she posts on her accounts often, she rarely ever interacts with fans on social media, mainly only to like content from fan accounts as I touched on earlier. I think this is somewhere she is lacking on social media, her fan interaction could be improved upon a lot especially since she has such a large fan base. An easy way she could get more interaction with followers is to simply post a poll on her story or ask them a question. I know since Kendall is traveling a lot for modeling she may not have a lot of free time, but it would definitely increase her likeability. Lastly, to improve she should post photos with her friends more often, I think she does a good job of creating authenticity with her pages so showing photos that are not just of her would make her look less selfish. As stated in Women and Girls and Social Media, “Instagram is the social media platform that encourages an image of girls as having to live up to a certain standard of beauty.” Since Kendall is the model with the most Instagram followers posting pictures with other people that are not in the model industry would help younger girls realize they do not have to look just like her to be pretty.
